Take a trip to the Gorenjska Region, which is only an hour’s drive from Ljubljana. This region is home to wonderful gems of nature. Take a stroll around Lake Bled on a picturesque trail and stop to enjoy a bite of the traditional Cream Cake. Lake Bohinj, the largest Alpine lake in Slovenia, is also nearby. From there, a wonderful trail will take you to the enchanting Savica Waterfall, which is quite a sight to behold for the eyes of a child.
Discover a fairy-tale world in a shepherds’ settlement, one of the few shepherds’ settlement of this size still extant in Europe. The roofs of the shepherds’ dwellings are covered with typical spruce shingles. June is the most vibrant month – this is when the shepherds move here to allow their cattle to graze until September. The shepherds like to invite visitors to taste home-made dairy goods or to enjoy a true shepherds’ snack with sour milk and mush (žganci).
Have you ever seen a lake that disappears and re-appears? Lake Cerknica is one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe. Many bird species and animals live around this lake. Hike up to the nearby peaks or walk on educational trails.
If you would like to see the largest artificial lake in Slovenia, visit Lake Šmartinsko near Celje. A beautiful biking and walking trail will take you to the lake, and you may also visit Zelen’ Dol, a village with three Finish wooden huts, which you can reach by boat.
Children are especially welcome at the Lipica Stud Farm. Experienced guides will introduce children to ponies and Lipizzaner horses and explain how horses communicate with each other and how to handle them correctly. Children can also ride a pony. A tour of the Sečovlje Salt Pans also makes for an unforgettable trip for the whole family. There, you can see how salt was traditionally produced and watch the interesting birds who live in the area.
In western Slovenia, you can visit the sun-kissed Brda Hills, which are full of vineyards and which offer wonderful views in all directions throughout this picturesque area nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Walk among rolling hills, climb up to the Gonjače Observation Tower or to the Slavnik hill, which you can visit on your way to the Slovenian coast.
Rogla Ski Resort and the Pohorje Hills near Maribor are an active paradise in eastern Slovenia. In winter, you can ski in the midst of vast forests, and in summer you can enjoy hiking and biking in the vicinity of Maribor, the second largest city of Slovenia. Visit the forest reserve around Lake Črno and the Lovrenc Lakes, where it is pleasant to take a rest on wooden footpaths with a view of peat bogs.
