Head to green forests. You can hike on easy trails or you can be challenged by high mountain peaks. With your friends, by yourself, or with your family. Numerous hiking trails are close to towns, so you can simply take various one-day trips.
The unspoilt nature of the Pohorje Hills is not far from Maribor; in fact it is located right next to the city. It includes natural sites, such as peat bogs with lakes, waterfalls, and ancient woodlands. Reach these sites on numerous hiking trails. Explore the ancient woodlands of the Pohorje Hills, the peat bogs around the Lovrenc Lakes, Lake Črno, and Ribnica Lakes, the mighty Veliki Šumik and Mali Šumik Waterfalls, and the crystal clear River Lobnica. Also head to picturesque wine roads, along which many tourist farms can be found.
Put on suitable shoes and head to these relatively steep hills, which spread in many directions and reach an average elevation of 1000 metres. Valleys and narrow gorges with crystal clear waters wind their way among the hills and ridges of the Idrija and Cerkno Hills. More than three quarters of the area is covered by woods, which are home to a rich world of plants and animals. Mt. Porezen, Mt. Blegoš, Mt. Kojca, and Mt. Črni Vrh are popular hiking destinations.
This dynamic landscape, with its well-marked trails, is an ideal choice in all seasons. You will be inspired by light strolls across meadows and pastures, through forests with rustling leaves, past inviting villages in the hills, and by ascents to panoramic peaks.
Are you interested in special themed trails? In the Koroška Region, there are almost 600 km of marked mountain trails and dozens of themed hiking trails. The Koroška Hiking Trail, the circular long-distance trail, and the K24 trail, the greatest hiking challenge in the Koroška Region, are especially attractive. You will surely enjoy hiking to the tops of the Kozjak Hills, Mt. Uršlja Gora and Mt. Smrekovec, and more advanced hikers can also climb Mt. Peca, Mt. Olševa, or Mt. Raduha.
In the rolling hills of the Posavje Region, you will be able to marvel at vineyards, admire orchards, observe slowly-flowing rivers, and visit interesting castles. Themed hiking trails offer various experiences, and the highest mountains reach up to 900 m. Mt. Bohor, Mt. Lisca, Mt. Grmada, and the Gorjanci Hills are among the most popular hiking destinations. In the Zasavje Region, also visit the most well-known hills, such as Mt. Kum, Mt. Mrzlica, Mt. Kopitnik, Mt. Čemšeniška Planina, Mt. Zasavska Sveta Gora, and Mt. Kal.
There are more than ten thousand km of marked mountain trails threaded throughout the dynamic landscape of Slovenia, and more than 150 mountain huts can be found along them. On weekends in particular, one can detect the aromas of typical Slovenian stews drifting from their kitchens. Many places offer locally typical delicacies. You might be offered žganci (mush) with sour milk if you visit mountain pastures where shepherds live.
